The worst thing about betraying yourself is how gradual the process can be. No big tragedy required. An act of laziness here, a lingering bad habit there. Letting something trivial eat up a few seconds, which then become a few hours. Picking small c comfort over big G Greatness every time the choice comes up.
These decisions are almost imperceptible...but they add up.
La Rochefoucauld talked about this: “Those who apply themselves too closely to little things often become incapable of great things.” (1665)
Petty things are always looking to crowd your desk, your calendar, and your brain.
Little people are always looking to start little fights.
Don’t let them.
Be wary of small evasions and compromises. Do not lose yourself to the little things.
Save yourself—your one life—the limited energies of your spirit—for greatness.
