I visited my favorite writer's favorite place...
A town at the end of the world that inspired philosophy classics
Inside this tiny, 200-year-old house...
One man wrote books that changed the world:
• Beyond Good and Evil (1886)
• Thus Spoke Zarathustra (1883)
• The Will To Power (1888)
Meet: "The Nietzsche Haus." Here are some pictures and stories from my recent trip...
The Nietzsche Haus is in Sils Maria, a charming town deep in the Swiss Alps. Right next to the town is Lake Sils. Fed by glaciers, it has the highest boating line in Europe. I'll show the boat ride video, but first, see the streets Nietzsche walked as he dreamt up his books...
The Nietzsche Haus is an independent museum now. For me the best part was the Nietzsche Library, a room with 4000+ books on the bad boy of philosophy. Found 3 interesting books:
• Nietzsche, The Aristocratic Rebel
• Reading Nietzsche Rhetorically
• Nietzsche's Epic Of The Soul
Below, you see the spartan room where Nietzsche wrote and slept. He wallpapered it with dark green - now faded - to protect his sensitive eyes. This is where ideas like eternal recurrence, the death of God, the revaluation of all values, and master morality first hit him...
But let's step out. Nietzsche: "Only ideas won by walking have any value." He himself walked 5-7 hours a day. From a letter: "An unworldly kind of feeling sits deep within me...(Sils Maria) is where I hope one day to die; meanwhile it offers me the best incentive to live on."
Here’s a small video taken on Europe's highest boat ride. This landscape was a poem crafted out of forests, clouds, water, and snow peaks...
I stayed at Hotel Edelweiss. 140 years ago, this is where Nietzsche ate his dinners after walking, thinking, and writing all day long. Except maintenance and care, the place has remained unchanged...incredible vibe.
The Albula-Bernina railway line, which takes you from Zürich to Sils Maria, is a UNESCO world heritage site. It crosses 196 tunnels and 55 tunnels...and it's been operational since 1904! An incredible engineering achievement. It inspired me. It's time to build…
The Nietzsche Haus conducts 2 annual colloquiums on Nietzsche...but they're both in German. They should do one in English too. And perhaps Jordan Peterson should record his next Nietzsche lectures here? Let’s make it happen. Share this essay on X and tag Dr. Peterson…
You can even stay at The Nietzsche Haus.
And you can donate to help them expand their operations.
Goodbye, Sils Maria! I will be back...
Very nice! Thanks
Fascinating.
