Everyone lies about creativity
Everyone lies about creativity. They say there's no wrong answer—but almost everything is a wrong answer. The right answer is rare, almost impossible to acquire—and valuable exactly for that reason. They say slow down, take your time—but the muses favor the restless. They say there are no limits—but Chesterton knew better when he said "art is limitation; the essence of every picture is the frame." They say meditate your ego away—but ego is the fire keeping you warm on cold lonely nights. Ego is the irrational little whisper in your head: "push harder." They say be non-judgmental—but every work of art sits on top of a thousand harsh judgment calls. They say don't compete with others, only yourself—but Da Vinci competed with Michelangelo, Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein in a horror writing competition with her friends, and the rivalry between Edison and Alexander Graham Bell gave us the telephone. Everyone lies about creativity. But in my book I tell you the truth.
